How important is persistence in weight loss? Persistence is extremely important in weight loss, just as it is in any endeavor in life.

When you first decide to lose weight, you are excited about making a change in your life, improving your health and your looks, and much more.

Losing weight is not always easy though, not because exercise and a healthy diet don’t work, but because there are many other factors that can come in to play. One is the fact that you will likely hit a plateau during your weight loss journey.

When you plateau, your weight loss stalls and the scale doesn’t move. This can last for a week or two, or even more if you are only a few pounds away from your goal weight. This can be frustrating, however it is especially important that you apply persistence and continue your healthy diet and exercise program during these times. You will eventually move past it if you persist (I’ve gone through plateaus several times myself).

Additionally, there may be times when you feel bored with your weight loss program. Perhaps you feel like you are “missing out” when you see everyone around you eating all of that tasty processed, and fast food. It is only by persisting through these times though, remembering your goals, and sticking to your plan that you will see the results that you are seeking. It’s easy to say “I’ll have just one”, or “just this once”, however I bet that if you truly could have just one, you would not be overweight in the first place. I know that’s true for me, at least.

All of the times that you give in to yourself when no one is looking, when you think “no one will know”, “what does it matter?”, “It’s only once!”, all of these add up. The truth is, it doesn’t matter that no one else will know, the most important person (you!) will know.

When you persist and continue to stick to your weight loss and exercise plan, then you will reach your goal weight and level of fitness. You will not only need to persist one or two times, but more than likely you will need to apply persistence 100’s of times before you reach your goal weight.

Weight loss isn’t always easy, however if you do persist, especially through those dark times when you are low on motivation and may feel dragged down or bored, your persistence will pay off and you will achieve your goals.

Wanting To Win Is Everything
©2006 by Max Steingart

Success is connected with continuous action.
It’s largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

You’re not finished when you’re defeated,
you’re only finished when you quit.
In fact, there’s only one way you can fail,
and that’s to stop trying.

Continuous effort, persistence and determination
will be necessary for you to succeed.
The odds are in your favor if you keep trying.

You can have a fresh start any time you choose,
for “failure” is not in the falling down, but in the staying down.
It’s not over until it’s over.

If you’ve got the courage to stick it out,
you’ll attain your goal.

Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to, is.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.
